Weed Control

I specialise in creating Australian native landscapes and I employ integrated weed control techniques to keep weed growth and ongoing maintenance to an absolute minimum. Integrated weed control consists of the following technqiues:

• Strategic use of selective and general herbicides.

This is something you learn quickly in conservation type work. Landscapers and gardeners who have not been exposed to the conservation sector have minimal knowledge of selective herbicides and how to use them effectively. The use of herbicides should be a means to an end and kept to a minimum once the weeds are destroyed and the garden established.

• Heavy mulching with tree mulch.

Tree mulch (from the tree loppers) is far superior to hardware mulches. The leafy matter composts quickly and enriches the soil with nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium etc. The composting process destroys a great many weed seeds lying dormant in the top soil. It also encourages earth worms to move in to your garden which then proceed to incorporate the compost through your top soil and aerate it in the process. Both also improve the soil quality, rainfall penetration and water storage capacity of your soil. And tree mulch is cheap - around half the price per cubic meter or less of typical hardwood mulches, with no delivery fee.

• Strategic establishment of competitive native ground covers that don't themselves turn into a long term maintenance head ache.

Herbicides are used to kill of the weeds initially, mulch suppresses the weeds for 12-18 months while the new plants get established but a good selection of ground cover plants (those that grow to a height of 30cm or less) will suppress weeds permanently. It is important to select ground covers that form a dense carpet over the ground that makes it very difficult for ugly weeds to compete.
